What is this?
Full interior clean: vacuuming, fabric / carpet extraction, leather and plastic surfaces, glass, steam, mould remediation when required, optional spot-treatment with enzyme for mild residual smell. Whole-cabin odour treatments (smoke, severe persistent odour) are performed under the dedicated JSAs: JSA 11 (ClO₂) or JSA 12 (Ozone) — see SOP-OD-001.
Performed by 1 detailer in 1.5–4 hours per vehicle, with bay doors open or fan-extracted.
What could hurt you?
- • Sharps / needlestick injury or bloodborne pathogens hiding in seat seams or footwells.
- • Severe skin burns / eye damage from concentrated alkaline cleaners (Malco pH 13, CS Xtra Clean pH 12.8).
- • Hydrogen peroxide eye damage (Percide H318) and oxygen-fed fire risk.
- • Mould spore exposure during decontamination.
- • Enzyme product (ValetPRO) — possible respiratory sensitiser if aerosolised; apply via foam/wipe, never mist.
Mandatory PPE
Nitrile gloves, sealed safety eyewear, P2 dust mask (extends to P2+OV for chemical work), long sleeves for biohazard / chemical jobs, knee pad for prolonged kneeling, heat-resistant gloves for steam.
NO contact lenses for Percide / Biosan II work — both SDSs flag soft lenses as a hazard.
STOP — Pre-clean inspection
Before reaching into ANY footwell or seat seam: visual sweep for needles, broken glass, bodily fluids, food. Use tongs or a magnet, never a bare hand. If bodily fluids are present, follow the Biohazard procedure (notify owner; full PPE up; consider declining the job). Sharps and pathogens are the highest-risk hazard on this task.
Mandatory PPE
-
Nitrile gloves
EN ISO 374 — also reduces biohazard exposure. Neoprene or PVC for Percide / Biosan II concentrate handling.
-
Safety eyewear / sealed goggles
AS/NZS 1337.1. Sealed chemical goggles (mandatory for Percide H318 work). Face shield when refilling Biosan II from concentrate.
-
P2 dust mask / respirator (escalate to P2+OV)
AS/NZS 1716. P2 for vacuuming heavily soiled / animal-haired vehicles; escalate to P2+OV for prolonged extraction (CS Xtra Clean) or mould remediation.
-
Long sleeves + knee pad
Long sleeves for biohazard / chemical cleans. Knee pad / kneeling mat to prevent knee injury from prolonged kneeling.
-
Non-slip footwear
AS/NZS 2210.3 — workshop default.
Procedure
- 1
Pre-inspect for hazards: needles, broken glass, bodily fluids, food, sharps.
Hazards
- ⚠Sharps / needlestick injury
- ⚠Bloodborne pathogens
- •Pest / contamination
Controls
- ✓Visual sweep before any reach into footwell or seat seam
- •Use tongs or magnet, never bare hand
- ✓If bodily fluids present: stop, follow Biohazard procedure (notify owner; PPE up; consider declining)
- 2
Remove loose items, mats and seats (if applicable).
Hazards
- •Manual handling — heavy mats, child seats
- •Pinch points removing seats
Controls
- •Two-person lift for seat removal
- •Bend knees, straight back
- 3
Vacuum all surfaces.
Hazards
- •Awkward / sustained postures
- •Allergens / dust
- •Trip on cord
Controls
- •Rotate posture every 10 min; use long wand
- •P2 mask for dusty vehicles
- •Route cord overhead or behind
- 4
Apply Malco Leather and Plastic Cleaner (diluted 1:3 to 1:10) to plastics, vinyl, leather trim. Spot-treat oil-based stains with Pacer Supa Rip diluted 1:10 ONLY where Malco is insufficient.
Hazards
- ⚠Severe skin burns / eye damage from Malco (pH 13, Skin corrosion 1A) and Supa Rip (pH 12.5)
- •May cause allergic skin reaction (sensitiser — both products)
- •Respiratory irritation in enclosed cabin (Malco H335 STOT-SE Cat 3; Supa Rip mist)
- •Cross-contamination of surfaces if wrong dilution used
Controls
- ✓Sealed goggles + face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, apron — no exceptions for Malco neat or Supa Rip 1:10
- •Per Malco SDS: chemical respirator with organic vapour cartridge if ventilation insufficient
- •All vehicle doors open; portable fan or extraction fan; rotate operator out of cabin between sections
- •Apply to applicator, never direct on panel
- •Mix dilutions in clearly labelled secondary bottles — never neat from container
- ✓Do not mix products; both react violently with strong acids
- 5
Carpet / upholstery extraction with Karcher Puzzi using CS Xtra Clean (Cleaning Systems) fabric shampoo at label dilution.
Hazards
- •Hot water burns from extractor wand and recovery tank
- ⚠Electrical risk — extractor near wet floor
- •Slip on overspray
- •H315 skin irritation, H319 eye irritation from concentrate
- •pH 12.8 alkaline — eye splash risk during refill
- ⚠Combustible Cat 4 (H227) — keep away from heat and ignition during refill
- •Inhalation of fine mist / pungent ammonia odour in enclosed cabin
- •Skin absorption of 2-butoxyethanol (WES skin notation, TWA 25 ppm)
Controls
- •Test wand spray before vehicle
- ✓RCD-protected outlet; cord clear of water; never operate Karcher Puzzi with damaged cord
- •Wipe up overspray promptly
- •Nitrile / neoprene / PVC gloves (per SDS); safety eyewear or chemical goggles when refilling solution tank
- •All cabin doors open; portable extraction fan if available; rotate operator out of cabin
- •Per SDS — wear organic-vapour / particulate respirator (AS/NZS 1715/1716) if inhalation risk; workshop default escalates to P2+OV for prolonged work
- •Pre-mix dilution per CS Xtra Clean label — do not exceed recommended concentration
- •Wash hands before eating / drinking / smoking
- •Eyewash and safety shower located within 10 m of refill area
- 6
Deep decontamination / mould remediation (when required) using Actichem Percide (CS610, peroxide H₂O₂ <8%, H318 eye damage) and Actichem Biosan II (CS439, concentrate UN 3267 DG 8 PG II H314, in-use dilution 1:16+ below classification threshold).
Hazards
- ⚠Mould spore exposure during disturbance — respiratory irritation, allergen / sensitiser potential, possible mycotoxin exposure
- ⚠Percide eye damage Cat 1 (H318) — splash risk during application; soft contact lenses absorb / concentrate irritants
- ⚠Biosan II CONCENTRATE: severe skin burns and eye damage (H314) during decant / refill (in-use 1:16+ dilution is below threshold)
- ⚠Percide releases oxygen as it decomposes — accelerates fire if one starts. CO₂ / dry chemical / foam extinguishers MAKE FIRE WORSE
- •Confined cabin space concentrates vapour; quaternary ammonium compounds in Biosan II can cause skin systemic absorption through cuts
- •Cross-contamination of next vehicle if equipment not cleaned
- •Latent biological hazard if vehicle had bodily fluids / flooding history
Controls
- •Pre-assess: photograph contamination; if heavy mould or unknown bodily fluids, consider declining or escalating with full PPE plan
- ✓Mandatory PPE: sealed chemical goggles (mandatory for Percide H318), neoprene chemical gloves (per both SDSs), PVC apron, P2 fit-tested respirator (mould environment), long sleeves
- ✓NO CONTACT LENSES — both SDSs flag soft lenses as a special hazard
- ✓When refilling Biosan II from concentrate: face shield + double gloves + long sleeves; do not allow concentrate to remain wet on skin / clothing
- •All cabin doors and tailgate open; portable extraction fan in cabin
- •Apply Percide ready-to-use (or 9:1 with Percide Boost — use within 8 h); allow contact time per label
- ✓Store Percide in containers with VENTED LIDS (slow O₂ release); segregate from reducing agents, acids, alkalis, combustible organic matter
- ✓FIRE NOTE: if Percide is involved in a fire, USE WATER ONLY (flooding quantities) — do NOT use CO₂, dry chemical, foam or halogenated extinguishers (they accelerate decomposition)
- •Apply Biosan II at 1:16 to 1:32 dilution per Actichem label; wipe / extract; allow surfaces to dry
- •Decontaminate equipment (extractor, brushes) between vehicles
- •Worker watches for delayed respiratory / skin / eye symptoms; report any reactions
- •Bag and bin contaminated absorbent / cloths; do not reuse for non-decon work
- 7
Steam clean stitching, vents, headliner.
Hazards
- •Burns from steam wand and condensate
- •Burns to others nearby
Controls
- •Heat-resistant gloves; warn nearby workers
- •Never aim at face or unprotected skin
- 8
Leather cleaning with Malco Leather and Plastic Cleaner (the same alkaline product used for plastics in step 4 — diluted 1:5 to 1:10 for leather, gentler than the 1:3 plastic ratio). Spot-treat ink marks with Andrew Methylated Spirits if needed (UN 1170 DG 3 PG II — flammable solvent).
Hazards
- •Malco — alkaline pH 13, Skin corrosion 1A; same product as step 4 with same controls
- •Repetitive scrubbing strain
- ⚠Methylated Spirits H225 — highly flammable liquid and vapour (denatured ethanol ~95%); flash point ~13 °C
- •H319 — serious eye irritation from Meths
Controls
- •Sealed goggles + chemical-resistant gloves + apron for Malco (same as step 4)
- •Test inconspicuous patch first — Malco at higher dilution is gentler but still alkaline
- ✓Methylated Spirits — NO ignition sources within 3 m. Apply to microfibre, never directly to leather. Cap container immediately. Bay door open / ventilation.
- •Static control on any decant >250 mL (ground / bond)
- •Vary grip; switch hands periodically
- 9
Glass clean and final wipe-down using in-house 50/50 IPA + distilled water mix.
Hazards
- ⚠Flammable solvent — 50% IPA still has a flash point ~24 °C (Class 3 flammable)
- •Eye and skin irritation
- •May cause drowsiness / dizziness in poorly ventilated cabin
- •Awkward reach across windscreen
Controls
- ✓NO ignition sources within 3 m (no smoking, no soldering, no hot tool use)
- •Mix prepared in a clearly labelled secondary spray bottle — never decant unlabelled; refresh label if faded
- •Apply to microfibre cloth, not direct on glass; wipe down with bay door open
- •Nitrile gloves and safety eyewear; ventilate cabin
- •Use both hands; lean carefully
- 10
Optional: odour spot-treatment — Valet Pro Enzyme Odour Eater for biological / mild residual smell. For smoke, severe persistent odour, or whole-cabin treatment, switch to the dedicated JSA: ClO₂ → JSA 11; Ozone → JSA 12. See SOP-OD-001 for method selection by odour type.
Hazards
- •Valet Pro Enzyme — possible respiratory sensitiser (enzymes can sensitise if aerosolised); SDS PENDING
- ⚠Whole-cabin ClO₂ or ozone treatment is NOT performed under JSA 04 — see JSA 11 / JSA 12
Controls
- •Enzyme spot-treatment ONLY in JSA 04: apply via foaming spray or wipe (NOT misted) to minimise aerosol; nitrile gloves and eyewear; ventilate cabin during application
- ✓For ClO₂ odour bomb (smoke / persistent organic / mould): STOP and switch to JSA 11. Different PPE (half-face respirator, gas/P2 cartridges) and different controls.
- ✓For ozone treatment (smoke specifically): STOP and switch to JSA 12. Operator NEVER inside vehicle during treatment.
- •Track any worker reporting respiratory / skin reactions to enzyme product (sensitisation cumulative)
